Something I don't understand, in World Annual Awards of The Century you say messi is SW 2015 while Ronaldo is Phenomen in 1997
Here messi 2014/2015 is considered as the third greatest performance while Ronaldo which I agree is 8 but it probably means Messi was also a Phenomen this season.

Same kind of considerations. Di Stefano C1 1957, Pele libertadores 1962-1963, Zico libertadores 1981, cruyff C1 in 1972 are rated as Phenomen in 1981 while Messi c1 2011-2012 only sw where I think he is a Phenomen and agree with your ranking as first.

      I I recap :
      - Messi 2010-2011 C1 must be rated as phenomen
      - C.Ronaldo 2016-2017 C1 may be rated as phenomen (or Di Stefano C1 1957 then pelé libertadores 1962-1963 C1 rating may be decreased as SW)
      - Platini 1983-1984 C1 may be rated as phenomen (or Di Stefano C1 1957 then pelé libertadores 1962-1963 C1 rating may be decreased as SW)
      - Baggio 1994 WC may be put 5 in the ranking (or performance decreased to SW, I don't think Didi WC 1962 and Van Bastan Euro 1988 can be rated as P)

      Cheers,

He made only 8 assists in 36 games. He had better record in 1987 - 1988 and 1979 to 1983. Anywa, Dbscalcio rates his 1984 - 1985 as the best season.

    1. In 2020 tournament, for productivity, he made 15 goals and 6 assists and scoring ratio vs team goals is 0.34 which remains inferior to CR7 profile at 10th place. In performance, I think he is a close call to the list.

  18. 1954 Sandor Kocsis in the World Cup has to be here. 11 goals (4 left foot, 4 right foot, 3 headers, insane versatility) and 3 assists (2 to Hidegkuti and 1 to Czibor) in their first 4 matches (unfortunately nothing in the Final). Pele's 1970 WC campaign was also robbed of a spot here. 4 goals, 6 assists, 7 matches, great defense. For international club seasons, Puskas 1960 needs to be 1st. The best UCL run ever with 12 goals and 7 assists in 7 matches leading Real Madrid to a win with 4 goals in the Final. Eusebio's 1966 World Cup was great as well. 9 goals and 1 assist in 6 matches while having one of the best dribbling performances in WC history.

As strange as it may be, Naratorn, the author, gave only an ordinary world class performance, not even supreme world class. So even if I don't understand the detail, it looks Messi WC 2022 is far away from the top 10 for the author of the site. Because to be in this list you need to be close to Phenomenal and supreme world class as I think Messi should be may not be enough to be there. But ordinary world class must be explained.

    2. It is debatable but 2022 world cup is one of the lowest standard in history of the tournament. How many players have performed in world-class ? It is too few. I think only Messi and Mbappe could be proudly named in that category. Messi in this tournament performed with superb vision and passing but he was slow and didn't cast a magic technique anymore. He wasn't as good as his peak of supreme world-class to phenomenal class for sure. That's why ordinary word-class is fair,

Thanks for the reply. But it's more when I compare the performance of Messi and others playmakers like Hagi 94, Zidane 06... I don't understand why Messi is not in the same class. Especially Zidane was maybe SW vs Brazil but in the average I don't feel he was better than Messi. Sometimes also you give SW to pure defender or pure goal scorer. I don't think Sammer was faster than Messi...
Ok for you WC 1990 is the greatest standard. But once again when I see Maradona during this world cup I feel just like what you described from Messi in your comment.
This is your choice, you are the author, with your rules, but this is more than arguable and not easy to get because this is not only a matter of pure performance but there is also a strong link with the rating you give to the level of the competition.

I think Messi and Mbappe should be in SW Class, 11 G+A is a very good figure, and they both perform well even in final. Messi has been very consistent during the whole tournament, have at least G/A in every knockout stage, and gave maybe two of the greatest assist ever in WC. These two assists were enough to put him in SW Class.

Also as mentioned above, Zidane 06 was WC Class, but I couldn't see how Messi has a worst performance that him in this tournament. I agree not in Top 10, but at least could barely goes into the SW Class.

    5. One more thing to add is that comparing to himself, it is quite obvious WC 2022 is his best world cup, even one of his greatest tournament. At least clearly better than WC 2010, 2014, 2018, CA 2015, and slightly better than CA 2021 (all rated as OW) as he really created some unforgettable and legendary magic moments.
I understand he is not rapid, physical and energetic as before, but I do think SW Class is quite fair rating to separate WC 2022 performance from the others

    6. Messi outclassed any players in World Cup 2022 by the high margin and he is an absolute integral part of the team and I understand why he could be rated in supreme-world-class. When look at his style of playing, he was still a great dribbler but much slower than his peak, even the best spectacular goal would be the one that he got pass Gvardiol and finally made a score. is impressive but I thought he took many steps and efforts to beat just a defender and it was strange that no one back up Gvardiol to intercept him. When standardize performance throughout history, I think he is in upper-ordinary world-class.

Baggio is P for half and SW in global in 1994 according to you but when I review the games he makes the difference vs Bulgaria, Nigeria, Spain... but I don't see why it's so much better than doing the difference vs Croatia, Netherlands or France ... as Messi did in WC 2022. P vs only OW.
Not sure Baggio is much faster than Messi in WC 2022 too.
