I. Introduction
The First
Official World Player of the Year award was just established by FIFA in 1991
elected by national team manager and captain. The unofficial world player of
the year was started in 1982 by reader voting.
The objective of this work is thus to establish the annual best three
World players of the year by evaluation system that ranked based on systematic
rating of performance in three major competition likes Domestic Club,
International Club and International Country in Seasonal Year or
Calendar year, starting from the beginning of domestic club season and
ended within July which includes international tournament (In example for 2000
-2001 season is belonged to year 2001 starting from Series A first game and
last in the 2001 FIFA Confederation Cup). The list starts from 1930 and the
only exclusion of period between 1943 – 1946) due to World War II interruption.

IV. Discussion
The systematic criteria of rating facilitates calculation of the approximate qualitative performance against the amount of playing and the level of competition. Definitely the qualitative performance that is evaluated by watching, awards and stats is debatable. Furthermore, the competition level criteria is one of the main factors in the evaluation. The system deduct only 25 - 50 % of criteria point if player didn't participate. Players who performed at the best level is not always finished the first place if they’re lack of opportunity to prove themselves enough in higher level international competition.
Due to the fact that competitiveness of candidates between years is varied. The
table of medal can represent the best players in their own era only. For example, Eusebio is evaluated to have never won best player of the world in any
year. Eusebio’s best year in 1965 is unfortunately beaten by Pele and Van
Basten who won 3 Ballon'Dor, won only one best player in the world in this list.
Lionel Messi become the best profile in sustaining as the best player in the world or one of top 3 best players with 12 years appearance in top 3. Pele appears only 8 seasonal years due to his decline performance in Brazilian football during 2nd half 1960s to first half 1970s and limitation of opportunity to participate in international football particularly 1967 Copa America, 4 times Copa Libertadores Cup that Santos didn't participate as the champion of Brazil during 1960s plus the five tournaments Santos disqualified is the main factor impede him from proving his consistency of peak in the international stages. Maradona also appears in top 3 for 8 seasonal years but is considered as the best player in the world only 3 times due to highest competitiveness of era with high profile candidates likes Rummenigge, Zico, Platini, Gullit and Van Basten. Maradona also decline in his performance in the late 1990s when he wasn't the best player in the world in any year.
The competition level criteria effects on both Van Basten (1988) and Ronaldo
(2002) who performed superbly in European Championship and World Cup,
respectively but they participated very low amount in domestic competition and
prevent them from achieving the level of top player in the World.
In 1930, there is no Uruguayan player appear in top 3 despite winning world cup trophy as the standard of competition is even considered to be lower than Central European International Cup that was competed by majority of top teams in Europe at that time. All winners in the 1930s come from Central European nations due to the dominance of Mitropa Cup and Central European International Cup.
The war-time years is included in the list between 1940 - 1942 when the majority of European leagues remained running its domestic competition (Only England, Scotland and France were interrupted by World War II) although the average standard of competition had gone down while the La Maquina" River Plate was spending their golden era led by Jose Manuel Moreno and Adolfo Pedernera.

In the post-war era, Hungarian players dominated the world football and win 6 years within the first 8 years and all top 4 players in 1952 are Hungarian. However, the next era (2nd half 1950s and 1st half 1960s) saw the most glory era of South American nations with the peak of superstars like Di Stefano, Pele and Garrincha and totally won 9 years from total 11. It is noticeable that South American players won in all three places in 1961 as the only year to have such a dominance. European nations return to dominate, winning 10 years from total 11 between 1966 - 1977. In 1976, Elias Figueroa is a strong contender of Zico in the third place but he is lack of international participation and if he make the list, all three winners are defender.
Between 1988 and 1996, the majority of winners are from Italian Series A and the winner is a defender in two years and five defenders appeared in top three. Since 1997, almost all winners played in Spanish La Liga, only three of them played in other league. It is noteworthy that there is only player from the champion of international country major tournament is a winner (Cristiano Ronaldo in 2016) since 1998 as UEFA Champion League became a main important competition in modern era of football. Prior to 1998, most of winners are from the nation won the title in World Cup or UEFA Euro.

Statistics
Congratulations to this compilation.
ReplyDeleteI would be interested in you Top6 for each year. I see you made Top3 lists for Europe, America and Africa in separate threads. Do you have a composite world ranking extending beyond the top3 positions?
I ever had the idea to create top five but I'd prefer to show the lower ranking players in continental annual best players. Anyway, I may expand it in the future. I'll notifying in bigsoccer if I'd have done it.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the answer.
ReplyDeleteYou know, I have been pondering about such annual rankings before the 1980s years ago, but did not have the means to do it. I am glad someone has overtaken this task.
I am looking forward to your Top5 world ranking as well.
I noticed a couple of inconsistencies between your Top3 world lists and the Continental top 3 lists. E.g. in 1989 you have Van Basten as the best European in that thread, yet here he is preceded by Matthaeus.
Also, there are many inconsistencies between your Continental top 3 here and the Best Cental European/British Isles footballer thread that you started this year at the bigsoccer forum.
Just to name a few:
In 1917 you have Schlosser as the best Central European, yet here Konrad is the best European.
In 1926 you have Jackson as the best from the British Isles, yet here Camsell is the best European
In 1929 you have Camsell as the best from the British Isles, yet here Gallacher is the best European
In 1930 you have Takács as the best Central European, yet here he is preceded by Smistik.
In 1931 you have Sindelar as the best Central European, yet here he is preceded by Schall.
In 1938 you have Zsengellér as the best Central European, yet here he is preceded by Sárosi and Bican.
In 1939 you have Wilimowski as the best Central European, yet here he is preceded by Zsengellér and Binder.
In 1950 you have Nordahl as the best Scandinavian, yet here he is preceded by Liedholm.
In 1951 you have Ocwirk as the best Central European, yet here he is preceded by Kocsis.
In 1952 you have Kubala as the best Central European, yet here he is preceded by Kocsis.
In 1953 you have Puskás as the best Central European, yet here he is preceded by Hidegkuti.
In 1954 you have Alberto Terry as the best Latin American (outside BRA/ARG), yet here he is preceded by Santamaria.
Could you check the reason behind these inconsistencies?
That is ine of the reasons I would be interested in your world Top6 for each year.
All the best,
Karoly (from Hungary)
Welcome and Thanks you for checking. The ranking in World Best Player and Continental Best Player is based on "Seasonal Year" while the ranking in zonal union is based on "Calender Year". Even so, I admit that zonal union ranking list is still not fully applied with performance system likes World Annual Best Player (There is not much evidence of rating to rate all players in every zone). Even so, seasonal year in some periods/leagues were also a calender year and I omit to link between WFHC to other involved zonal union lists. I'll finish revision soon.
DeleteDo you plan to extend your list to years before 1930?
ReplyDeleteI would be very interested in seeing your opinion.
You already ranked the Top2/Top3 European and American players in the 1910s and 1920s, perhaps it would not bee too difficult to merge those lists.
I didn’t make the list for the pre-war years because there were too few official international matches at that time aside from the 1924 and 1928 Olympic years. Anyway, for your request, I’d name my best player list in 1920s. Please just wait for the result soon.
DeleteThis is my pre-1930s list (Seasonal Year). I’d start at 1924 and just specified for the status now.
Delete1924 Hector Scarone : His leading role for the 1924 Uruguay Champions
1925 Manuel Seoane : Copa America Best Player/Top Scorer
1926 Jose Leandro Andrade : Copa America Best Player
1927 Antonin Puc : One of the best players in Mitropa Cup, scored five consecutive games for Czechoslovakia and his influential role helps his nation won six games in row.
1928 Dixie Dean : Phenomenon Domestic Goalscoring
1929 Jozsef Takacs : Phenomenon Domestic Goalscoring
Thanks for those Top players after 1924.
DeleteBased on your continental Top players lists and your positional best players lists, I made a few educated guesses the perhaps reflects your opinion. I realize your positional best players lists may be a bit outdated, so there may be discrepancies.
1911: your best striker is Schlosser, the best European. He must be the world’s best as well, as Piendibene was also a striker.
1912: the best European is Middelboe. He must be the world’s best as well, as Friedenreich is not even the best striker (Schlosser is ahead of him)
1913: your best striker is Ohaco, the best South American. He must be the world’s best as well, as Schlosser (whom many consider as the world’s best) was also a striker.
1914: you did not name a best European, although the war only started after the end of the seasonal year. Probably Ohaco is still ahead of Schlosser.
1917: your best striker is Scarone, the best South American. He must be the world’s best as well, as Schlosser was also a striker.
1918: your best striker is Schaffer, the best European. He must be the world’s best as well, as Friedenreich was also a striker.
1919: based on your positional data it is not possible to decide between Konrád (midfielder) and Friedenreich (striker). It is difficult to decide between these two.
1920: an interesting year. You have Samitier as the best European and best midfielder. As far as I know, the best South American Romano (whom many consider as the world’s best) also was a midfielder. So based on your system Samitier was the world’s best.
1921: based on your positional data it is not possible to decide between Orth (midfielder) and Tesoriere (goalkeeper). I would choose Orth. Many people consider Friedenreich the best, however even Scarone is ahead of him as a striker in your system.
1922: based on your positional data it is not possible to decide between Orth (midfielder) and Seoane (striker). Seoane is considered by many to be the best in the world this year.
1923: based on your positional data it is not possible to decide between Morton (midfielder) and Nasazzi (defender). Morton is considered by many to be the best in the world this year.
Do you have any comments on this?
Regards,
Karoly
I understand your logic to link involved lists to apply in conclusion of World Best player.
DeleteSo, it means I have set World Best Player of The Year unintentionally.
For inconclusive years, I'll attempt to make conclusion soon.
1914 I'd confirm Schlosser is not up there as he scored number of goals below standard of that era.
ReplyDelete1919 Id prefer Freidenreich who was chosen as Copa America best player and scored three hat-tricks in Brazilian state league. Konrad seems to achieve one of his best seasons but all international games were friendly matches.
1921 I agree Freidenreich should be selected, he scored seven hat-tricks in domestic competition.
1922 I'd strongly choose Orth. Seoane scored 55 goals in amateur league is very impressive but he had not first capped yet.
1923 I also go for Morton. Nasazzi reached his peak during the second half 1920s to the first half 1930s.
great job as always, but in 1988 I disagree that time I had been following football and Van Basten played much more than any other player on earth in 1988, but it's a great job in this section
ReplyDeleteThis list is rated base on seasonal year so 1988 means 1987 - 1988 season which Van Basten played only 11 Series A games and scored 3 goals, played in international club just 3 games.
Deletegot it
ReplyDeletebest ever winners doesn't quite match the list of best peak players.
ReplyDeleteI'm not sure about which list of "Best Ever Winners" you cite for. Could you make more specific word for me ?
DeleteThe Greatest Winners list on this page doesn't match best peak payers list and i think that it should because the peak list only considers one season, same as this.
DeleteOK I'd say the two lists is similar but still not the same. The best winners list is considered base on system of competition criteria and another list of highest peak is not take system into account just determine the whole peak regardless of competition they played. In example, players who did not play in international club because his team finished below eligible group would not be disadvantage as the system is not applied.
DeletePlayers who did not play in international club and world cup and so on don't have disadvantage in peak performance, but in best winners list it does matter, right?
DeleteYes, the importance of difference is "Opportunity". As players' equity of opportunity in playing international competition is always an issue, the highest peak list give the equity to them.
DeleteDear all friends, just add list of the most world-class years performers and the most consecutive world-class performers list.
ReplyDeleteIn greatest winners lis messi has P-P-SW and in 2012 list he has P-SW-SW for the same year. you need to edit that . also maradona 1986 is 4. in greatest winners list and has sw-na-p, but maradona in 1980 has p-na-p but that year is lower, why is that?
ReplyDeleteYes, Messi's performance code is typed wrongly.
DeleteI know your question about Maradona is very strong notification. SW-NA-P in 1986 beat P-NA-P in 1980 because P (NT) in 1986 which was held the World Cup is much more meaningful than 1980 (NT) which has no major tournament. In another sentence, P (NT) between two years is equal in class but actually not equal in amount of performance depend on level of competition standard. Although 1980 has a better domestic class (P) than that of 1986 (SW), it is considered not enough to compensate the NT difference.
can you explaint the difference between this most world class season list and most sustainable players list?
ReplyDeleteVery good question !
DeleteSustainable player mean consistency + longevity
Most world-class players is just subset of sustainability. In example, player likes Maradona is not considered in top ten most sustainable players as his performance was much declined below his standard at 30 years old, means longevity base on standard of performance is below average. Anyway, I think I've overrated Romario so I need to update.
you should update the table of winners
ReplyDeleteIn what stage of development is the greatest winners list?
ReplyDeleteEvery lists in World Annual Award of the Century is being in the intermediate developing state.
DeleteCan you explain the methodology behind the greatest winners list, i would like to exand it for myself.
ReplyDeleteIt is just a basic determination, just check performance-class in relative years based on proportion of competition (Generally club part and NT part is equal and int.club is given in less weight) and ranked them in descending from the best.
DeleteOk, thanks.
DeleteMessi's int. club in 2011 is sw but pele's and zico's who are behind him in The Greatest Footballer's International Club Season of All-Time have phenomenon??
ReplyDeleteI saw that C.Ronaldo has received 3 silver medal, not 2
ReplyDeleteCan you please explain or link why you think Beckenbauer in 72 has the 7th best int performance ever? I see he played only 2 matches. Where did you read that he was so phenomenal that he should be considered as the 7th best ever? Btw , Pele in 58 should be in top 3.
ReplyDeletePele in the 1958 is even below level of Didi and Kopa. Pele scored many goals but made no assists while Kopa scored 3 goals made 10 assists, twice timed more productive than Pele.
DeleteThe 1972 European championship was available in only twice game and I need to include the game since quarter-final round. It is always hard to compare players in different position within a short period of competition. The 1972 German team is one of the best ever and I consider Beckenbauer was the best player of the tournament ahead of Netzer and Muller who also achieved the top performance. Muller scored 4 goals in 2 games is a phenomenon record but as I see, the overall game direction is known to be much influenced by Beckenbauer. However, I wrote based on my unclear memory from what I saw clip video. I have a plan to review this list in the next months.
Pele had 2 assists in wc58, and I think that Kopa had 9 not 10 but I'm not sure about that.
DeleteYes , Pele assisted 2. You can see that in Bella Kona's youtube chanel. Pele was without doubt the MVP of the 1958 tournament. I think even Fontaine was better than Kopa.
Delete1993- don balon ( Laudrup-3, Stoichkov whitout place in best 50), el mundo (Laudrup-2, Stoichkov-19), ballon d or (Laudrup-5, Stoichkov-14).
ReplyDeleteI agree and have revised according to your suggestion. Anyway, M.Laudrup was named in top 10 FIFA World Player of The Year when Romario finished second place and Stoichkov finish fifth place. I found it is too difficult to name Romario in top three. He had the best international club profile than the two but his domestic is rather inferior, participating only 25 games and scored only 22 goals in Eredivise. In the 1992 – 1992 seasonal year, Romario played only 2 games for Brazil and scored no goal despite the team scored 5 goals totally, it is disappointing impact of productivity.
DeleteWhy did Ronaldo and Messi get the same score for domestic club in 2014 when Ronaldo was the MVP and the Top Scorer of the league?
ReplyDeleteC.Ronaldo and Messi made the same number of Goals + Assists and the games played is equal. Messi was more contributed to his team than C.Ronaldo during the game creation.
Deletesven rydell in mid 20's
ReplyDeletejohn hansen in late 40's
can u check both of them ?
Svenn Rydell scored a ton of goals in NT career but mostly against lower level Nordic teams. Swedish league at that time is difficult to rate also. John Angelo Hansen ? His peak is belonged to the 1950s.
DeleteRomario had a spectacular performance in the Cup 94 Decisive It should be 3 forward johan
ReplyDeleteSorry, I'm not understand what you said "it should be 3 forward Johan" ?
DeleteSorry, do not write right, meant that this ranking
DeleteThe Greatest Footballer's International Tournament of All-Time
Romario was better than Cruyff, 3rd in the performance of 94 World Cup
Rai was the best player in the WORLD in the year 92
ReplyDeleteHe won the Paulista Championship, Libertadores Cup and World against Barcelona
Because it is not 1?
Rai is impossible to beat M.Laudrup in 1992. M.Laudrup clearly played football in higher technical and creative level. Rai won South American footballer of the year but did not acquire Bola de Oot uro. The fact of matter that Copa Libertadores Cup in early 1990s is much lower competitive standard than that of European Cup. Even so, it does not mean Sao Paolo cannot beat Barcelona by this logic since the intercontinental cup is provided only one match.
DeleteNo no
ReplyDeleteat that time the Copa Libertadores were the same level as the European Cup
The Intercontinental Cup is proof
São Paulo was better than Barcelona and Milan in 92.93?
E Velez Sarsfield beat Milan on 94?
The Intercontinental Cup was the decision that decided the best World team if they win surely was coz it was better
Rai made two goals against Barcelona in this game, how do you explain that?
I don’t think so. Many top South American players had already been exported to Europe and it highly impacted on the team quality in overall. You shouldn’t consider only winner of intercontinental cup since it was played in only one game and the inferior team could apply the tactic extremely. Likes FA Cup, many inferior teams could beat superior team as usual.
DeleteIf Milan and Barcelona was better because it did not win?
DeleteSo for his thesis the tactic used by St. Paul and Velez was better for it won the Intercontinental Cup
And why did Raí better than Laudrup in 92
In case you decide based on only an intercontinental cup match, it is a rating for intercontinental cup not overall competitions, right ? In example, when Man Utd lost team form lower division in FA Cup, that means Man Utd would be rated in lower performance in overall season ?
DeleteThe knockout competition held a too few numbers to represent the entire benchmark between the team in different league.
Here in South America's most important competition is the Intercontinental Cup / Club World Cup
ReplyDeleteWho wins this competition here at least is considered the World's Best Team and year
But tell me then for its cuz criterion Barcelona he played a weak La Liga with just a good team that was Real Madrid, it was better than St. Paul who won the Brasiliero Championship playing against more than a good team like Vasco, Flamengo, Palmeiras, Corinthains
What is your criterion to say that St. Paul was no better than Barcelona?
In 92 we made 4x1 and 4x0 them at Real Madrid
And Rai was the highlight of the team?
I need to know your opinion
The early 1990s covers the year between 1990 and 1993. Sao Paolo won only one national domestic tile. Other ranks are 2nd,4th and 6th. Barcelona was number one in La Liga in consecutive three seasons (1990 – 1993) with additional half of season of the 1993 – 1994 that Barcelona also win the champion in the final table. Surely Campeonato Bresileiro has a higher standard but it is not that much different in benchmark Sao Paolo at 4th of Brazilian league equal to Barcelona at 1st of La Liga. Barcelona is clearly better domestically when Sao Paolo is also better in international club but not by much. Sao Paolo won two Copa Libertadores when Barcelona won once with additional quarter-final at the first half of the 1993 -1994 season).
DeleteOK
ReplyDeleteBarcelona and Olympique won more international titles over the fairest would consider the Championship level
While Barcelona only had one team of the same level and Olympique only it dominates France Sao Paulo at 93 played 98 games in year one Remember and so had no physical condition to win the Brazilian Championship that how you himself said has a much higher level than the other league
Brazilian champions could be up to 8 times that also have to be taken into account
Can you fulfill the table of medal? I just want to assess objectively the capability of each players. Thank you!

Why is Cruyff 74 above Pele 70 in int tournaments? That is extremely counter intuitive.
ReplyDeletePele had better passing accuracy and also much better pass acuracy in the opponents half(where it's harder). Cruyff dribbled much more players but the percentage for duels won is not very far(56.2%Cruyff,42.7%Pele). Cruyff had better defensive imput , while Pele socored 4 goals(compared to Cruyff 3) with one game less. Both created a huge amount of chances(36Cruyff , 28 Pele) with Cruyff being the better Crosser and Pele being the by far the more decisive creator having double the amount of assists(6 to 3). And if you go beyond sheer numbers the gap becomes huge as Pele's performance is a classic in every way in that WC. Even his misses were legendary(atempted lob from halfway , pele-dummy against Mazurkiwicz and save of the century against Banks). Not to mention that as a small factor, even tough we're speaking about individual performance , he even won the tournament , wich should count somewhat.
Cruyff was more dominant on his team than Pele as he was less supported by his teammates, being seen more often to conduct the ball by himself and even got deeper to midfield area to create the game. Cruyff in his peak was absolute indispensable fro Holland. You can check how much Holland got draw and Lost without Cruyff when Brazil was less impacted without Pele.
DeleteWell Holland was more affected from Cruyff's absence because Brazil was better overall. Pele's Brazil is generaly regarded as the greatest team ever but that doesn't make Cruyff's performance better. Pele won it , he scored more , assisted twice more and even when missing have classic World Cup moments. Hands down better performance.
DeleteHow can Figo be ahead of Zidane in 2000 and 2001? And why Zidane is rated as 1st in 2003 (could be Henry or Nedved) and, especially, in 2006?
ReplyDeleteCan you explain please? Don't get me wrong, Zidane is a great and elegant player, and was the World best player in 2000 and 2001, but i think that you overestimated him at the year 2006.
Also, can you explain your position about the individual peak of the main players in 2002. The year of 2002 look me so undefined (Ronaldo, Zidane, Roberto Carlos, Kahn, Ballack or Rivaldo).
Sorry now I don’t have much time to reply so I would be best at just explain based on the performance rating system.
DeleteIn 2000, Zidane has a problem in international club part. He participated in UEFA Cup round of 32 only. That’s why Figo is very advantageous as he led Barcelona to semi-finalist. As well as 2001, Figo is much better in int.club while other competition are not wide gap between them. For 2003, it is actually a tough decision between Zidane and Nedved as they have a similar profile of performance but I rate Zidane in a higher peak when he performed superior technique and creativity to his club.
2006 is also closed between Zidane and Ronaldinho but I think Ronaldinho played too bad in World Cup that led his rating is decreasingly down.
Why isn't Pele 1th in 70? Both him and Jairzinho scored 11 goals at club level and Pele had clearly the World Cup MVP so how is he above O Rey?
ReplyDeletePlease tell me how many games Jairiznho played by each domestic competition. I 'm not sure but I just saw Pele was much declined in domestic career at that season.
DeleteSorry but I don't know the number of games. Pele was in decline compared to his standard but not to Jairzinho.
ReplyDeleteAccording to France Football's Le nouveau palmarès , Pele was retroactively named World Player of the Year in 1970 , as they replaced their previous choice , Muller.
Hi,
ReplyDeleteI am glad you published your updated list, I have been waiting for this for a long time. Let me ask you three questions:
1. In some cases (already in 1930) the order of the top players does not follow the number of points in the score column. Why is that?
2. Would it be possible to show at least the Top5 in each year? It would be interesting to see which players came close to finishing in the Top3 each year.
3. I hoped you would extend your list at least back to 1920. Do you have any calculations, or at least a subjective annual Top3 for the years between 1920 and 1929?
Hi, I would reply item by item
Delete1) It is just found to be incomplete. I already revise.
2) For potential 4th and 5th place, it has been showed in European/Americas hall of fame although it does not cover all possible cases (such as the year either European or Americas won all three places)
3) In the 1920s, the potential candidates have also been shown in European/Americas hall of fame and I’d prefer combine it in the World list because the international competition was too limited at that time and no key evidence to compare playing standard between nations.
In "The Most Consecutive World-Class Year Performers", Messi has 8 years (2008-2015), but he deserves 9 years (2008-2016). And you have to put the table of the 2014-2016 years after the 2009-2013 years.
ReplyDeleteHow can Zidane be behind Henry in 2006 when they have the same performance class in every club competition but Zidane has higher class in world cup?
ReplyDeleteBecause Henry's performance in UCL is much better than Zidane as Arsenal reached final match.
DeleteHow many goals did Sindelar scored in 35. I see you rated him world player of the season.
ReplyDeleteA guy in xtratime.org gave me a link of his career statistics but I don't remember the link well and it need time to search. Anyway I remember he should score around 25 - 30 goals at that season, not very prolific but he was more creative than productive.
Deletehttp://www.level-k.com
DeleteIs this the link?
As I see here, that year isn't recorded and his highest scoring season ever is 1933/34 with 23 goals. That would mean that 35 is his highest scoring season ever?
Oh, OK, I think it is not accurate for his domestic career as I did not get the goals stats but Austria Wienna scored only 38 goals in the entire season of 1934 - 1935. I think I overrate him. Saorosi should be superior. Anyway, there seems to be not many great candidates at that year.
DeleteTed Drake and Alex James are the best candides for that season apart from Sarosi.
DeleteThey both are better than Sarosi in league games but it is too difficult to rate players without international appearances very high.
DeleteRonaldo is unanimously agreed as best player of this season hands down. The odds for him winning the Ballon d'Or are 1.02, the lowest ever.
ReplyDeleteThat is much depend on criteria. As he participated only 77 % of league games (my criteria allowed at least 90 % to get full participation so he obtain 92.5 %) as well as his major absence in Copa Del Rey, he is rather disadvantageous.
DeleteSome revision then maybe, because apearently he is clear cut winner.
ReplyDeleteAlso in 2013 he should be no.1 He was the UCL Best Player, not Ribery as you list him. Ribery wasn't even in top 70 best players in that UCL season according to whoscored based on objective statistics.
OK, I agree C.Ronaldo performed as the best player in UCL in 2013. When I revise score, Ribery still lead C.Ronaldo by margin. I don;'t tale whoscore rating much as it take only quantitative stats not qualitative. I'm sure Ribery was playing well enough to be rated in world-class in that UCL season.
DeleteIn don't understand the rating. League OW vs OW, Cup SW vs SI , UCL SW vs OW , Int. Country OW vs OW and yet Ribery still obtains higher rating? Ronaldo was better in league, Cup, UCL and NT. How can Ribery be better? He should be ahead of even Messi(even won all the WPOTY titles).
DeleteYou just read the criteria at the top of the page where you can see point range for each class but I've not specified score in the table. Anyway, in this case, Score is provided as below
DeleteDomestic League C.Ronaldo 83, Ribery 83
Domestic Cup : C.Ronaldo 90 (x0.95 for 2nd place), Ribery 78.5
UCL : C.Ronaldo 87 (x0.9 for semi-finalst), Ribery 81.5
NT : C.Ronaldo 83.5, Ribery 83
According to this , Ronaldo had the better season. Don't know what I'm missing.
DeleteUCL 87 x 0.9 = 78.3 for C.Ronaldo < 81.5 for Ribery
DeleteYou wrote in table that Barcelona was first and Real was second in domestic league in 2017. Need to fix that.
ReplyDeleteBundesliga MVP in 2017 was Emil Frosberg. And 2nd place Aubameyang, not Lewa.
ReplyDeleteKaka definetly wasn't Serie A MVP in 2007 and neither does he deserve SW as it wasn't even in his top 3 Serie A seasons. The best player that season was Totti.
ReplyDeleteOK, I agree but he remains the first place although I have rated him down to supreme-International-class.
DeleteWow, you actually chose Lewandowski. He's certainly an option, but I think that Kroos is still criminally underrated, and Modrić had poorer first half of the season just like Ronaldo, so My top 10 would be: 1. Messi 2. Ronaldo 3. Kroos 4. Modrić 5. Lewandowski 6. Marcelo 7. Neymar 8. Suarez 9. Hazard 10. Thiago Alcantara
ReplyDeleteWhat do you tjink?
Toni Kroos played quite well in UCL but he made only 3 assists and 1 goal in total 14 international club games. That is very low productive. Modric made only 2 assists as well.

Hi, your study is very very very interessting.
ReplyDeleteBut there-s some points i don't understand (because i'm french) :
- i understand the system of score concerning the competition won.
But how points you gives for the talent/level, for the goals scored during the season etc ... Is your scre only about trophies won ?
-Why sometimes a player have more points than other but are not behing (exemple : 87 Mathaus have a bigger score than maradona (76 vs75.4)
- i really like your study but it's difficult to me to accept that you consider, if i understand, that a domestic league is more important than the champion's league ou world cup ... Can you explain me how you estimate the %. Too, there're not enough difference between C1 and C3.
I wait for your answer to understand.
Thnak you.
Thanks for looking into my system of rating. The level of performance is approximate by what I watched, rating by magazine, status of awards but it could not always accurate. The performance level is applied to amount of participation that is depend on team place in each tournament.
DeleteIn 1987, I must mistakenly provide. Let me fix it.
% criteria of competition is considered based on opportunity of playing and importance of competition combined. When Domestic is less important, it is a basic competition that all players meet opportunity to play. Thus, the percentage is an approximation of equivalence between these two factors from experiment.
I don't understand something :
Deleteyour score are only about palmares/victories, or the level of the player and his stat give some points too ?
Can you explain me with an exemple please ?
And the point for a world cup or an Euro ?
In example of Platini who finished semi-finalist with France in the 1982 world cup.
DeleteFormula = World Cup Criteria (30 %) x (Round) (0.9 for semi-finalist) x performance (he is rated in 86/100) = 30 x 0.9 x 0.86
For international club is calculated in the same formula.
Then, calculate sum of all competitions : Domestic + Int. Club + Int. Country
I know that currently you are watching full historical games so I was wondering if you are updating annual awards and scores based on what you notice? I know that you are for all time list I just wanted to make sure you don't forget about annual awards. :)
ReplyDeleteThanks. I'm not forget but I've also not updated for now. I will look into the list if there should have been revised.
DeleteAbout the 86/100 for Platini : it's your own rate ?
ReplyDeleteDo you know where i can find the awards of the ranking of El Grafico ?
Yes, my estimate of rating. I'm not understand which awards do you mean.
DeleteEl grafico is a mag in Argentina, and they used to organize a vote to choose the best american player.
ReplyDeleteExemple : in 1981 Maradona won before Zico and Fillol.
But i dont find the palmares for the other year.

2017- Messi 1 .Now -2 /Why changed?
ReplyDelete(ОК .2017 Penaldo OW dms.league ,Messi OW - stupid rating / incredibly ,close the site idiots)
It is actually SI for CR7 domestic League. Messi rating in domestic league is just slight below supreme world-class. You need to know there are various points within one range of class.
DeleteInt.Country - https://youtu.be/Uzkpb7NUzhw?t=5m25s ow
Deletehttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mh2fDrqQuds si / LOL .
You put that you will finish the list of greatest ever by single competition in the mid of 2019. Is it correct? Or the the list will be ready this month?
ReplyDeleteAnd another question: when will you update "the highest peaks" in positional hall of fame?
I think I will done at the end of this month. For the peak performance, I will update soon after the World Cup.
DeleteJust have to say I wholeheartedly agree with you that luca modric has been the world's best performer for the past year , I just hope that fifa will agree with your assessment later this year.
ReplyDeleteFIFA awards is resulted from the votes with various perspectives of people combined. It is not an assessment so the awards is more general social acceptance.
Deletenot suggesting he should be in the top 3 but was Mo Salah world class this season and is this a first for a North African player? (I was thinking partly of what you said about Shinji Kagawa being in 2012 the second Asian player to achieve world class performance so wondered what the case was for North Africa)
ReplyDeleteI think so. Mohammed Salah is the first North African player ever to achieve world-class performance. However, if include the lost north African player to European nation , Larbi Benbarek is likely to be the first one.
DeleteYou got to be ******* kidding me with Griezmann on 2nd place and no Messi in top 3. And seriously man, I get it that you want be as close to objective truth as possible with this vaguely looking methodology, but I don't care about some pseudomathematical aspects of this based on arbitraty numbers or "classes" that u think players "obtained".
ReplyDeleteI just clearly see, that no matter what, there's no way that in individual award (I repeat INDIVIDUAL), some guy who didn't manage to get his team out of champions league group stage and then won consolation prize, who was clearly inferior in domestic competitions to Messi, and then being one of 5-6 players key in winning world cup, but again individually inferior to at least Modrić and Hazard, is above Ronaldo and Messi.
Start placing your mathematical models in some contextual reality of actual results and actual individual performances (regardless of quantifiable stats and/or team results), or there's no need to take this site seriously
For godsake I burts laughing, when i saw Adriano and Lewandowski, and no Modrić in 2017 having season of his life, and so on and so on...
What are you talking about ? Griezmann played with inferior team to that of Messi and he managed to win Europa League is easily satisfying. When Griezmann has much better performance in World Cup, he is eligible to surpass Messi who is great only domestic football in this season unanimously,
DeleteTell me you're joking. What's even the point of doing this blog if you can't grasp such obvious things. The Messi/Ronaldo fatigue really gets to you people, eh? Looking for other candidates despite theres still no need for it.
DeleteThe guy didn't just win domestic double. He absolutely bossed it like in his best times and dragged Barca to the title. Just imagine if new player like that suddenly emerged, and banged 34 goals and 12 assists just like that, with style of play involving things such as this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yURexqDz8KY& You wouldn't even think twice to consider him, and just because it's Messi you dismiss such a dominant display - which is just so much better than Griezmann. In champions league, he wasn't bad up to that famous Roma game either - sure he wasn't spectacular and it's not campaign to remeber, but he's definetely had better european season than Griezmann.
Wake up man. I repeat: WAKE UP, and start judging these things in real life context - Europa League, when talking about highest level of players who ought to be best of the best, is freaking consolation prize, especially after you can't help your team score against freaking Quarabag in group stages. Hell, I would even undestand your fixation if it was performance of Falcao 2011 and 2012 calibre, but it's not. It's just team who failed in CL, with leader who failed, winning second category trophy. The only thing that gives him enough to be considered in top 10 is world cup performance, which wasn't godlike level. Just part of collective, one goalkeeper mistake, 3 penalties, good link up play, and that's it. He shouldn't even be in top 5, cause Salah and De Bruyne had easily better club seasons
Also, I would really, really, like to hear your reasoning behind putting Adriano ahead of players like Henry, Lampard or even Gerrard, Eto'o. If you're gonna say "beacuse of Copa America", I'll propably fell out of my chair with laughter
Well, I never told you Messi is inferior to Griezmann in club level when you did not even mention how should Messi be discredited for his performance in World Cup. Henry was really not in a great performance for France in 2005. Gerrard's average domestic season is only 6.70 which is below world-class.
Delete>when you did not even mention how should Messi be discredited for his performance in World Cup
DeleteI don't even know what that sentence means.
And what should have Henry done? It was a season without tournament, give him a pass. At club he was way better than Adriano, I don't know if there's even anything left to say, you don't know who Henry is or what? :V
Copa America for decades have not been regarded with enough esteem to warrant Adriano place above players clearly considered better than him. Just c'mon
>Gerrard's average domestic season is only 6.70
I have no idea what this number means and I dont even want to know, sorry. What I know is, that Gerrard was best player of the Champions League and had domestic performance good enough to be considered higher than Adriano and be in discussion for top 3 (altough I would pick Henry, Lampard and Eto'o above him)
I went to check on Adriano wiki page now, and I see I had a lapse in memory - it's 2005 so there was no Copa America, it was year earlier. I must have assumed it because you rated "international" in him so high.
DeleteThen that makes it even more ridicolous, because, apparently, you rated Confederations Cup so highly (now I see you removed card with 2000's decade, I hope it means you're reevaluating this).
I don't rate Confederation cup so high, give only 20 % of total rating. In 2004 - 2005 seasonal year, Henry played in World Cup qualification and scored only 1 goal against Cyprus. It is not even a debate that Adriano is much better in NT games.
DeleteThen maybe you should give it, I don't know, around 2 or 3% of total rating :D To correspond with reality, no? :D Oh my god, why am I even talking to you, do what you want man.
DeleteHenry in one of his high level seasons being rated below the unfulfilled talent who no one in their right mind would consider to ever be 2nd best player in the world - that's just amusing. I basically never seen him rated that high. Not to tell that social acceptance is all that matters, but in this case theres really a reason for it. Your evaluations work wrong, just change it somehow.
And I suppose you either agree with the rest of my comments which you didn't reply to, or don't undestand it, or don't want to respond? Either way have a good day, expert.
2001-2010 tables are missing
ReplyDeleteAre you seriously not having Messi in top 3 for 2018???? all experts were laughing at the fifa best awards because they clearly rate the world cup that consist of 7 games higher than being consistently good for a whole year. I see that you have the same mindset as them, screw winning the double and leading in most attacking stats for a year, right? Antoine has been a freaking joke club wise in 2018. I thought your annual award was for consistently being good for a season or year, not a freaking 7 game tournament -_- So disappointed in you.
ReplyDelete7 Games in tournament is definitely very important if take standard of competition into account.
DeleteIf I can give my point about this Naratorn maybe it just shows some people would like to have also a ranking cut split into dom club... it doesn't cost a lot to do.
DeleteUpdate!Update!Update!
ReplyDeleteIn 1965 can you explain the reason why L.Suarez is not in top 3
ReplyDeleteAs watched his performance in 1965 European cup final, he played very smoothly and few remarkable scenes that is captured. He played for Spain only 2 games as well.
DeleteIn 1936/1937 Moreno won Argentinian scoring 1 goal by game. Can he be a candidate ?
ReplyDeleteHis domestic scoring is surely impressive but he is not even a starter in 1937 south american championship.
DeleteErico was part of 1937 and score only 1 goal on penalty kick. I don't see it in your table. Have you taken it into account ?
DeleteWhen a player did not play any official international match in the year, the competitiveness is rather low.
DeleteIsn't Messi la liga 2014/2015 a Phenomen season ? Same question for Messi UCL 2010/2011.
ReplyDeleteActually I give him phenomenal class for a half of season but the I specify the lower class for overall as it must be below phenomenal class as combined.
DeleteYou didn't Evaluate because of world war but would you agree ?
ReplyDelete1943 : Zizinho? I don't think so but maybe Mazzola ?
1944 : Zizinho
1945 : Zizinho
1946 : Mazzola? Maybe Zizinho again ?
As you said, when the world war two are highly impacted to European football. Only friendly match internationally. There is no international stage to identify their performance in connection to domestic performance.
DeleteIn la liga 2013 2014. I don't understand why Messi is only OW while c.ronaldo is SW. This thing changes everything and make a player useless in wc 2014 number 1 while this is one of your main argument to discard messi from top 3 this year 2017/2018.
ReplyDeleteAs I check, domestic performance ranking table shows CR7 rating is just ordinary world-class so I think I forgot to update this table. As a result, their score is in the same level but I'd prefer CR7 because his peak in UCL is better than Messi's peak in any competition.
DeleteC.Ronaldo did a SW performances in UCL, but note most of the goals after the group stage have been scores when the game was over. S.Ramos saved him in final and he was offered a penalty kick once again when the match was over. Now if you have a look at Messi WC 2014 he was SW in group stage then OW which I agree give an OW perf but it was not less good than Modric WC 2018. Remember also this year, Messi was removed a valid goal vs atletico that would have most probably provided the title.
DeleteFor all of this I would rather go for a draw or maybe would have a look to Neuer.
Interesting information that I really overlook. When the player scored a ton of goals under free-of-pressured situation, the specialty must be reduced. CR7 only scored important goals just once against Schalke. Let me review again.
DeleteI reduce score of CR7 in 2013 - 2014 but let explain Messi is also below his standard and his score was overrated too.
DeleteThanks for the details.
DeleteBut this year shouldn't it be above modric then ?
Modric was OW in La liga, played only 26 games, OW in UCL and OW in WC
C.Ronaldo is SW in UCL, this time more goals, when the match was not over even if he got a miraculous penalty kick in QF, and disappeared in SF and Final, OW in Domestic and OW in WC with a huge performance vs Spain.
I don't think modric 2017 2018 was better than messi 2013 2014 in la liga.
I am not convinced the overall perormance of Modric in WC is signficatilly better than messi 2013 2014.
So the difference is done on modric UCL I guess
Can you confimrm ?
Can you explain what BLK means in 1948 for Puskas ?
ReplyDeleteI found balkan cup. Maybe it means you should complete the abreviation list
DeleteIn 1956, why Di Stefano isn't the best player with 2 SW performances?
ReplyDeleteWell, He did not play in international country game.
DeleteIn 1955, then why is he first and not Kopa ?
DeleteThe same class is designated in range of score. Kopa is rated in the bottom level of the range when Di Stefano is rated in higher zone of the range.
DeleteHave you evaluated pedro rocha in 1960 ? Was he close to top 3 ?
ReplyDeleteHe hadn't been capped yet in 1960 so no point to rank him among the best players in the world.
DeleteIn 2003, Nedved didn't play but reached the final. What about Ronaldo this year, I remember his game vs manchester united. From how much does he miss top 3 ?
ReplyDeleteIn 2003, Ronaldo is remarkable only in domestic football and there are some other better performers in overall likes Van Nistelrooy and Raul.
DeleteSo Ronaldo's SW performance vs manchester united in the 4 3 and goal vs Juventus is not enough right ?
DeleteMoreover why Henry is only OW in Premier League whiles he scored 24 goals an deliver 20 assists. He looks to me a SW performance.
DeleteI agree Henry in 2003 is deserved supreme world-class.
DeleteMoreover it's a detail and I don't think it impacts a lot but you say R32 in UCL for henry when Arsenal was eliminated while 16 teams remaining.
DeleteIsn't it more R16 ?
OK, That is my mistake. As recalculated, his score is in the same rate as Zidane. Henry is now second place for 2003.
DeleteI think tou should ensure to define all the abreviation used in the table :
ReplyDeleteCE : Central European International Cup
SA : South American Championship
BH : British Home Championship
LT : Latin Cup
EC : European cup (UCL)
IF : Inter-Cities Fairs Cup
WCQ : World Cup Qualifier
ENQ : European Nation Qualifier (=ENR?)
ERQ : European Nation Cup Qualifier (= ENQ?)
ER : UEFA European Championship
MC : ???
OG : Olympic Games
CI : ???
FL : Friendly?
OK I have added. CI is actually equal to CE.
DeleteIn your opinion Gianni Rivera doesn't deserve the golden ball in 1969 ?
ReplyDeleteWell, I watched him in 1969 European cu[p final and he is under expectation.
DeleteWhy not but cristian ronaldo has often be under expectation at this stage semi final/final and it didn't seem to impact thant much.
DeleteActually it is impacted proportionally. In related two matches of European Cup, I'm not impressed on Rivera's performance. He seems to be superb in only first round match where he scored important goals in both leg. Moreover, Milan scored only 31 goals in that season. Rivera scored only 3 goals. I'm not saying scoring stats is all of considered performance but stats beneficially tell us about the limitation. CR7 is evidently superb in the remaining of matches aside from final match in related years.
DeleteIn 2004 I was expecting to see Deco in the top 3. Can you explain why he is not here please ?
ReplyDeleteDeco had excellent seasonal profile when Porto won triple champion and Portugal reach final in Euro but his style of play is not spectacular. He was expert in vision to pass but scoring ability is poor for his AM position. His technique is also not competitive enough.
DeleteMaybe for this year for the scoring (61 games for 4 goals and 12 assists), remember he was good in UCL (scored in final ...)
DeleteThe following years in barcelona and probably the year before it would have been ok right ?
Moreover I am suprised what you think of his technique. it's not only 2003 / 2004 but this kind of video can show Deco's technique : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LAi-Ywu28qU, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c4VW-BxV4w0
No Stoitchkov in 1992 Top 3 ?
ReplyDeleteHe is one of the high-profile candidate in 1992 for his club performance but he scored only 2 goals in 5 games for Bulgaria.
DeleteHe was not qualified for Euro with Bulgaria and Stoitchkov is not only a striker but is active and can create chances or goals. Moreover, if you consider friendlies, this is not the same motivation. And if you see him just as a scorer he was key during the SF group stage scoring the first goal most of the time.
DeleteI watched him played in European Cup and I know his style of play that create his won chances to score but it is undeniable his performance is limited in Euro qualification.
DeleteQualification were not in 1992 but 1991 and if you want to limit to season 1991/1992 there is only 2 games played with Bulgaria that should count. The one vs san marino and Romania.
DeleteNote that he also played in World Cup qualification against Finland in May 1992 and score no goal although Bularia win 3 - 0.
DeleteStrange to find Romario 3rd in 1997:
ReplyDeletewhat about : Mijatovic, Raul, Figo, Sammer, Djorkaeff, Bergkamp, Moller ... ?
Just to be sure you saw this one ;)
DeleteNow I agree that Romario is overrated. He scored only 3 goals in Copa America and the goals he scored is follow many goals of his team. He mainly played in regional league in that season. Mijatovic is deserved to replace him although he was not outstanding in La Liga but his international performance is extraordinary.
DeleteIn 1995 what about Zola, Weah, Litmanen ?
ReplyDeleteEspecially litmanen, who won everything he could in 1995 scoring a lot of (important goals)
DeleteHe scored only one important goal in the 1994 - 1995 UCL knockout round. He only scored against Faroe Island and San Marino in the 1996 Euro qualification.
DeleteIn group stage he scored the second goals vs Milan when Ajax was suferring
DeleteIn the last game he scored the first goal ensuring first place. (remember Milan was docked two points for crowd trouble against Casino Salzburg so they were copeting for first place)
He scored once again the first goal vs Munich in semi-final (and another one less important)
He scored 17 goals in the winning eredevise (maybe not enough competitive for you)
Moreover, we are talking about 1995 but the year after he scored also in semi and final and has no chance of top 3 because he plays for finland
Playing for finland is not an easy task...
Is Bergkamp just SI and not OW in euro 1992 ?
ReplyDeleteI watch him play. He is really not outstanding enough for the entire matches.
DeleteIt means for you Zidane did the same kind of performance in WC 2002 (being injured and playing the last game) than Bergkamp reaching euro semi-final and scoring ?
DeleteI don't understand why there is a so big gap between zico and rumenigge in 1982.
ReplyDeleteCould you explain please ?
Zico did play in int.club and this is inevitably disadvantage. Amount of performance in World Cup for Zico is also significantly less than that of Rummennigge.
DeleteIn 1952 when Puskas is associated to Kocsis it seems you are choosing kocsis mot probably he scores he makes me a bit confused about the kind of player Puskas is. You categorized him as a Forward so even if he scores less, if he brings creativity and assists, his scoring rate should be enough.
ReplyDeleteCan you clarify a bit ?
Puskas scored 22 goals in 26 games in Hungarian league. His scoring record is statistically failed if take a look how many scores produced in that era. In 1952 Budapest Honved scored 88 goals in total. He made it only 25 % is just average. Apart from scoring record, there is no evidence of footage or assist stats but Puskas' position and role is really expected to score more. In Olympic games, I agree I underrate him since he scored important goals in semi-finalist and finalist but his overall score remains lower than Kocsis.
DeleteWhat about Ballack in 2002 ? He didn't win anything but ended 2nd, reached UCL, World cup and German Cup final and was the heartbeat of his teams.
ReplyDeleteMoreover, only 1 game for Zidane in world cup is not a problem ? What was the performance level or Rivaldo in CM for you ?
DeleteThanks you for helping development of this list. Zidane is lucky enough to be number one as the 2002 world cup is one of the lowest standards in its history so this seasonal year is not much competitive. Although Ballack was rated by kicker in world-class only half of season in 2001 - 2002, his performance in UCL and World Cup should be enough to make top 3. As reviewed, I will replace Raul by Kahn in 2001 and Ballack to replace Kahn in 2002.
DeleteIn 2006 Henry is only SI in UCL ? What about his awesome goal vs real madrid ? He scored also vs Juventus next round. I was expecting OW. He was the leader of the team. In final he didn't score but try a lot.
ReplyDeleteHe scored only 4 goals and made 2 assists in 11 games. He scored important goals in Round of 16 and quarter-final
DeleteI'd like to discuss 2005:
ReplyDelete- First point, in 2005 why is there only 0.3 points between Adriano and Ronaldinho while for you Ronaldinho is SW in Domestic and International while Adriano is only OW in both and SI in Int Club?
- Second point, Lampard scored 13 goals and delivered 18 assists leading chelsea to a so waited title which is for me close to a SW performance.
- Third point, I have no doubt Adriano was an incredible player and I understood you give a lot of credit to international performance but this is a point for which I am not in line with you and your amazing work.
To me, friendly or friendly competition performances should not have a high percentage in rating.
This year, there are :
- Henry, 25 goals and 14 assist in Premier league, R16 (8 matches, 5 goals) in UCL and even if he didn't score a lot in WCQ, in my opinion we should mainly compare Adriano's WCQ with Henry's one.
- Gerrard leading Liverpool to a win in UCL.
- Lampard : I mentionned it.
I don't see how Adriano can be above those players, especially Lampard.
And I would go for Ronaldinho, Lampard, Gerrard/Henry.
1) Ronaldinho did not play in Copa Del Rey and his points must be deducted significantly.
Delete2) I'm not agree Lampard's peak is in supreme world-class range. He is too limited in technique.
3) Adriano is a golden ball winner in 2005 FIFA Confederation Cup with superb performance. Gerrard in 2005 scored only 1 goal in 8 games. I'm sure Henry's overall score in that year is below Adriano.
